  I sometimes use collage to compose creative ideas for more imaginative pieces or to try out background concepts. I'll often render these backround colors or textures in paint when I go to canvas, but sometimes the work on paper takes on a life of its own and I continue to dabble with watercolors and pen to pull out images that seem to be appearing more or less spontaneuosly as I go along.

  I've also had fun using gelatin prints to create rich backgrounds where images appear as if one were trying to visualize images from ink blot prints.
